With the ever-growing and powerful technologies some ideas that are beginning to become physically generated quite literally seem out of this world. In a world where data is becoming more prominent and valuable, it is no wonder there are so many great stories and films produced on the idea. A lot of modern technology is becoming capable of tasks that would have once seemed unimaginable for anything other than a human to complete. From making a cup of tea to making weather predictions based on historical data, these are tasks machines are now doing every day! With all this in mind it seems no wonder so many great programs and films have been made based on this technology, and here are just a handful of them!
The Imitation Game
The mathematician that “cracked the enigma”, Alan Turning‘s story is told in this ingenious film. Used by the Germans to encode their messages the Enigma was a crucial part of the Nazi plan in the attempt to hide vital information in plain sight away from the enemy . To break the code, Turing created a computer that would consider all arrangements of the code at a faster rate than any human mind could possibly achieve. When the code was successfully cracked by Turing’s remarkable machine this is what help allied forces secure their victory. This movie isn’t one to only highlight Turing’s story but also describes the extreme process of creating the first-ever machine of its kind while producing not only the skill of coding and encryption but also that of cryptography and cybersecurity.

Black Mirror – Be Right Back
This black mirror episode is one that really explores the idea of being able to create an exact identical copy of a real person both looks and personality based solely on the content that they have put online. This episode is based on a character “Ash”, a day after moving into a new home with his girlfriend, “Martha”, Ash dies in a car accident. A grieving Martha is told by her friend about a new technology which at first she is reluctant to try but after finding out she is expecting Martha tries out this new online service. Using all of Ash’s past online communications and social media profiles the service produces a new but virtual “Ash” which Martha begins to communicate with through sending images and instant messaging. She is also able to talk with him over the phone even taking it on walks. As the story moves forward Martha takes on the service’s experimental stage, turning a blank synthetic body into an android that acts looks and talks exactly like Ash. (Takes the saying new year new me into a whole different extreme!) How does it end? You’ll have to watch it to find out…

Her
Despite the main character falling in love, this is not a film one would perhaps describe as a typical romantic. A lonely writer falls in love with a machine and begins to develop a real relationship with his new operating system, one that is created originally to meet his everyday needs. This machine manages to develop continually by taking personalities of the programmers who took part in its own creation, it is able to learn and evolve through experiences. Smart OS Samantha takes opportunities given by the use of predictive analysis and programming; it is up to the audience to decide if “her” intentions and even purpose are for better or worse.
